Why so many Haitian TPS holders are looking north
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has terminated Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation effective 3 August 2025. Unless a court blocks the decision, more than 500,000 Haitians may lose work permits and deportation protection.(Federal Register)
Canada, meanwhile, plans to welcome 485,000+ new permanent residents each year through 2027, with most spots in economic streams.(Government of Canada) The combination is pushing many Haitian TPS holders to explore Canadian options before their U.S. status expires.
1. Family-class sponsorship
Spousal/partner, dependent child, parent, and grandparent sponsorship rules remain unchanged. The challenge for TPS holders is having a Canadian citizen or permanent-resident relative who meets the income requirements to sponsor them.
2. Study → Work → PR pathway
Apply to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and get a study permit.
Graduate and obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) (8 months–3 years).
After ≥1 year of skilled Canadian experience, enter Express Entry (CEC stream).
The list of PGWP-eligible programs was updated on 4 July 2025, restoring several fields removed on 25 June 2025.(Government of Canada)
3. Typical timelines & practical tips
Processing times: 6–18 months for most PR streams; two-week targets exist only for Global Talent work permits and certain study permits.
Before you apply:
Take an IELTS (General) or TEF/TCF Canada language test.
Order an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for non-Canadian diplomas.
Create a free Express Entry profile to see your CRS score.
Network with Canadian employers—job fairs, LinkedIn, provincial recruitment missions.
Consult a licensed professional for strategy, especially if you need an LMIA or have any asylum-related risk.
4. Economic-class permanent-residence programs

Final word
Canada offers multiple legal routes for skilled workers, students, entrepreneurs, and (in specific cases) refugees. But each program has strict paperwork, fees, and deadlines. Haitian TPS holders should start early, gather documents now, and get professional advice to avoid losing their status in the U.S. while exploring a future in Canada.
